Server Type Network:

This Server/Client diagram shows that businesses connect to the internet via modem through their ISP. In the internal network there is generally a router or firewall behind the modem, depending on the type of modem (IE. Gateway). Generally behind a firewall/router you have your core network, which would then connect to a switch or router. The switches then in turn connect to other networking devices such as wireless access points and switches. From the networking layer servers, PCs and printers are attached. The servers will provide services to the PCs such as file sharing, e-mail, program requests, etc.

Peer to Peer Type Network:

In this diagram, it shows that a peer to peer network connects to the internet via modem through their ISP. In the internal network there is generally a router or firewall behind the modem, depending on the type of modem (IE. Gateway). Behind the firewall/router you have your internal network, which will be a switch. Through this switch you have PCs, printers and wireless access points connected.

Benefits:

Firewalls:
The benefits of having a firewall behind your modem are being able to keep out unwanted traffic coming into your network. Some firewalls can also act as an IDS/IPS (Intrusion Detection System/Intrusion Prevention System). This will prevent malicious code coming into your network and infecting your computers.

Server/Client Infrastructure:
The benefits of having a Server/Client infrastructure is so that better security practices can be done to keep your network safe from unwanted access. You will be able share information through your company with certain employees if necessary. You can easily deploy company wide computer policies and programs to your employees. You can host services through your own server instead of through other hosting services if desired also.

Anti-Virus Server/Client Infrastructure:
The benefits of having a Server/Client anti-virus setup is that your server will manage the anti-virus clients. This will help with manageability and reliability of the infrastructure. With this practice reports can be setup so that there are notifications sent when viruses or other issues are detected.
