The Pros and Cons of Telecommuting

  Is it right for you?

One definition of the word Telecommute is: “To work at home using a computer connected to the network of one's employer.” While there are other ways of telecommuting, this method is generally considered the most common, as well as the most practical.

Does your company offer telecommuting as an option? Telecommuting has the potential to maximize productivity, save on resources, and benefit the environment. Many career paths give business owners the option of allowing their employees to telecommute, either on a regular or temporary basis. Some companies report that the savings received from telecommuting double the expenses incurred.

It is a particularly useful tool when employees are unable to travel to work due to outside influences, such as a natural disaster... such a system can enable employees to continue working and providing results for their business.

As impressive as all that sounds, though, it’s important to realize that telecommuting is not for everyone. While under the right circumstances it can mutually benefit both employer and employee, there is good reason to consider the potential drawbacks as well.

For the frequent flyer, single parent, or terminally ill, telecommuting might seem like the perfect solution – and it could be just that. Telecommuting could also save the employer a lot of the wages paid towards the “dead time” that often occurs at work, such as chatting around the water-cooler. Of course, the same can be said for the telecommuter. An employee must be able to remain focused on his job while working from home or other location, and the employer needs to be confident that they will report their work hours honestly, since this is not easily monitored. If an employee doesn’t meet these criteria, telecommuting may not be an appropriate option for him. Needless to say, discernment is required to determine the best fit for each individual.
